Back-to-School Savings Hacks

With a little planning and these savings tips, your kids won’t be the only ones learning a thing or two this Fall.

Early Bird Gets the Worm
Shopping early gives you more time to create a list of items you need, shop sales, find coupons, and avoid rush shipping costs. Checking off a back-to-school list over a couple months vs. a rushed weekend lowers stress during an already busy time. Taking a list with you when shopping also helps you and the kids resist adding extra items to the cart, which can quickly add up.

Have the Money Talk

Talking to your younger kids about the budget prior to back-to-school shopping helps to set expectations and teach them financial responsibility. If your kids are a little older, consider having a conversation about what is important to them and let them choose what items they are willing to spend less money on. Managing their expectations before going to the store might make the experience a little smoother while saving money.

Online Shopping
You might want to consider looking online for specific items on your list so you can research and price compare. Try ordering ahead of time to avoid rush shipping costs and keep an eye out for free shipping promotions. Many sites also give you a percentage off your first order if you provide your email address or phone number to receive marketing. Even if you are shopping in-store, do a quick Google search to see if you are getting the best deal and don't be afraid to ask for price matching.

Buy in Bulk

For items you go through quickly, buy in bulk; you’ll save on cost per item and have it on hand when you need it. This is great if you have multiple kids needing the same items. If buying in bulk doesn’t work for your family size, consider getting together with some other families in your community to split the bulk items. Things like pens, notebooks, snacks, and binders are needed every year and are on everyone's list.

Get Thrifty

Check out local consignment shops that sell gently used name-branded clothes and accessories for a deeply discounted rate compared to buying them brand new. You can also sell clothes that are in good shape at these shops and put the money towards this year’s back-to-school budget! Online resale sites also have a wide variety of items for a discounted price.1

Local Dollar Store Finds

Items like paper, poster boards, pens, basic calculators, rulers, organizing bins, and so much more can be found at your local dollar store. Check the store’s terms and conditions to learn about their policy on manufacturer coupons to see if you can get an even deeper discount on name-brand items.
